The skin stapler gameplay guide
Core gameplay loop

The Skin Stapler is a single-player, retro-styled PSX grindhouse horror adventure set in Carrion City. You take control of jaded detective Dick Slater and his eager rookie partner Robbie Knox as they hunt the serial killer known as The Skin Stapler. The core loop is built around moving from one crime scene to the next, surveying the aftermath, and pressing forward through action encounters to reach the next major story beat.
- Arrive at a location such as The Burrows Apartment or Gutters End and survey the scene for context.
- Push through combat and exploration in the surrounding streets and interiors of Carrion City.
- Follow each trail to a chapter-defining moment that unlocks the next area.
The rhythm is short and direct: investigate, survive, advance. Because there is no co-op or multiplayer, every encounter is tuned for a solo detective duo, so you always have to manage both partners' safety yourself.
Combat and exploration
Exploration is the connective tissue between chapters. Carrion City is presented in a retro PSX style, with grimy environments that blend horror atmosphere into straightforward action pacing. You will move through locations like Carrion City PD,Underworld VHS, and Lazar's Blood Bank in search of leads.
Combat is action-focused and readable: expect close-quarters encounters and tight interior spaces that force you to manage positioning as much as aggression. The grindhouse tone means fights are mean but fair, so most encounters come down to knowing the room before it turns into a chase.
- Check every room before pushing forward; the PSX presentation hides leads in corners and side rooms.
- Keep moving during fights; static positioning punishes you in narrow interiors.
- Use chapter names as landmarks; each named area signals a distinct scene to explore fully.
When a new chapter name appears on screen, treat it as a checklist: explore the immediate area, interact with anything interactive, and only then move toward the next corridor or doorway. Rushing a named scene can lock you out of context you will want later.
Progression systems
Progression in The Skin Stapler is chapter-driven rather than loot-driven. The game tracks 16 Steam achievements, and this achievement list mirrors the story structure, effectively doubling as a chapter checklist. Reaching a new achievement marks a named story beat, from the opening scenes to the final cutscene chapters.
The full game launches on August 6, 2026 for $11.99, developed by Tainted Pact and published by Assemble Entertainment. It is not an early access title, so the chapter structure is complete from day one.
- Single-player only: no co-op, no multiplayer modes to factor into progression.
- Achievement tracking: the 16 achievements act as a progress map for the main campaign.
- Family Sharing support on Steam means saves and library access carry over cleanly between accounts.
Chapter structure and pacing
The campaign is built from clearly named chapters. Based on the achievement structure, the order runs from the opening investigation to the final confrontation:
- The Burrows Apartment and Carrion City PD open the case.
- Aftermath Parts 1-4 carry the investigation through the middle stretch.
- The Quick Fix and Gutters End push into the grimmer districts of Carrion City.
- Luna's Cream Filled Donuts,Underworld VHS, and Lazar's Blood Bank are the late-stage scenes.
- Closing In and the final cutscene chapters resolve the hunt.
A retro-styled PSX grindhouse horror adventure set in the rotting, crime-soaked sprawl of Carrion City.
The repeated Aftermath Parts names also telegraph pacing: expect a wave of short, linked scenes in the middle of the game rather than one long stretch. That is the moment to settle into the loop and conserve your focus for the later named locations.
Mid-game goals
Mid-game runs from the Aftermath Parts through The Quick Fix and into Gutters End. These chapters reconnect the threads from the opening scenes and point everything toward the late-game environments. Your practical goals during this stretch are simple:
- Keep the case thread clear: Aftermath Parts 1-4 reward players who remember details from The Burrows Apartment.
- Explore Gutters End thoroughly; it is a turning point before the late-game areas.
- Map the remaining chapters: by the time you reach Luna's Cream Filled Donuts, you should be able to match your position against the 16-achievement list.
Mid-game is also where the pacing escalates. The early chapters teach the loop, while the mid-chapter names signal a steady climb toward Underworld VHS, Lazar's Blood Bank, and the Closing In finale. Treat the middle of the campaign as the last chance to adjust your rhythm before the final stretch of the hunt for The Skin Stapler.
