The skin stapler beginner guide
First hour checklist

Your first hour in Carrion City sets the tone for everything The Skin Stapler throws at you. You start as jaded detective Dick Slater, partnered with eager rookie Robbie Knox, and the game wastes no time pushing you toward your first case. The PSX-style presentation is deliberate, so give yourself a few minutes to adjust before you judge the atmosphere.
- Read every on-screen prompt, especially when interacting with case files, the evidence board, and desks. The game teaches its investigation basics through these early interactions.
- Search Dick Slater's office before leaving the station. Interacting with the "Thank You" note in his office unlocks the Skin Successfully Stapled! achievement and is extremely easy to miss if you rush the intro.
- Complete The Burrows Apartment chapter to earn your first story achievement,FeFe - Master Baiter. This first case teaches you the core investigation rhythm you will use all game.
- Talk to Robbie at every opportunity. His dialogue often hints at what you should examine next, and you get the full picture of both partners from these early conversations.
Treat the first hour as a tutorial disguised as a murder investigation. Every object you examine and every line of dialogue with Robbie teaches you the loop you will rely on through all 16 achievements.
Core loops
The Skin Stapler is a chapter-based horror adventure. You move through grimy locations in Carrion City, examine crime scenes, gather evidence, and advance the hunt for the serial killer known as The Skin Stapler. There is no co-op and no multiplayer, so the entire investigation is on you and Robbie.
- Investigate each room thoroughly before moving to the next area. Interactables blend into the low-poly PSX environments, and important evidence is often tucked into corners.
- Progress through story chapters, each named after a location or case. Major chapters like The Burrows Apartment,The Quick Fix, and Lazar's Blood Bank are separated by shorter Aftermath chapters that move the story forward.
- Fix The Skin Stapler tapes when the game asks you to. This objective, tied to the Runebee - Jank Ya Later! achievement, is a distinct gameplay beat where you repair story-critical tapes instead of just collecting them.
- Reach the final cutscene to close out the story and earn Robbie Knox - Mind Officially Blown. The game is linear, so playing through once naturally unlocks the majority of achievements.
Expect a 6 to 8 hour first playthrough if you are thorough, with most of that time spent in the larger location chapters. The Aftermath parts are shorter connective segments, so do not treat them as full cases.
Early mistakes to avoid
New players tend to hit the same walls in the opening chapters. Here is what to avoid so your first run stays smooth.
- Rushing ahead of the dialogue. Robbie is not just flavor text. His reactions point you toward the correct clue and keep you from wandering the map unnecessarily.
- Skipping the office before the first case. If you never touch the Thank You note, you miss an easy achievement and have to backtrack later or replay the intro.
- Assuming every chapter is a full case. The Aftermath chapters are short story beats, so do not expect a full investigation in each one.
- Ignoring the tapes. Tape restoration is a late-game objective, but you should collect and inspect every tape you find early, because they feed directly into the Fix The Skin Stapler Tapes step.
- Treating it like an action game. The Skin Stapler is an adventure first. You rarely fight your way out of situations, so examine, read, and talk your way forward instead.
What to do next
Once the first case wraps, keep following the chapter order toward the ending. Your immediate goal after leaving the police station is The Aftermath Part 1, then The Quick Fix chapter, where you earn the Hexy - Wiener Whisperer achievement. From there the path continues through The Gutters End, another Aftermath beat, and onward into later locations like Luna's Cream Filled Donuts and The Underworld VHS.
- Work toward the tape-fixing objective whenever the story offers it. The final chapters,The Closing In and the Final Cutscene, unlock after the tape restoration step.
- Use the achievement list as a chapter tracker. Each major chapter has a named achievement, so your progress is always visible on Steam.
- Save Family Sharing and achievements for a single run. Since the game is single-player only, your progress and all 16 achievements live on your own Steam profile.
- Revisit the office near the end. If you somehow missed the Thank You note, grab it before the final cutscene so the achievement count stays complete.
